I'm probably going to be kicking myself soon for giving away the fabulous people I read everyday to keep me updated on the wacky, weird and down right cool D.C. happenings in my Washington Post Weekend cover this week.

For now, though, I'm happy to share just how we were able to get these six lovely folks to pose for the cover. Washington Post staff photographer Marvin Joseph is the man! Watch him work his magic to get everyone to lighten up.

Check out my piece in today's Weekend section about the Saturday horseback rides led by the Rocking S. Ranch's Bill Schwasta at Barrel Oak Winery. If my account doesn't convince you to check them out tomorrow (call in advance!) then these additional photos will.

It's with great excitement that I announce my new volunteering column with the Washington Post Weekend section. So often folks associate the word "volunteer" as the same ole same ole acts of do-goodery. Don't get me wrong: Those who donate time to the likes of nursing homes and soup kitchens are simply superb. Still, these volunteer concepts are widely known about. What else is out there?

Quite a lot, actually.

With each monthly column, I'll introduce readers to an under-the-radar volunteering opportunity. I'll pitch in myself and recap my experience to convey a tangible taste of what each gig is really like. Don't expect drudgery. If you've read any of my previous work, it's pretty clear I like writing about offbeat, yet awesome topics. Expect to find some pretty oddball options to come in the future.

My first venture?

Learning how to be a cat taxi driver.

Man I love my job. On a beautiful Wednesday, I drove an hour out to Knoxville, Md. to go whitewater rafting for a Washington Post Weekend review. Such a blast.

My River & Trail guide Artie Badger was terrific. Not only did he make me feel safe, but the amount of historical knowledge he imparted throughout the trip was phenomenal. I recommend requesting him.

Also special thanks to the hyper/hilarious group of girls who let me tag along their first rough water adventure. (Sorry I couldn't get the bit in about those fishermen mooning us ladies!)
